Activist~
Anthony became active in temperance movements, which advocated against alcohol consumption. Anthony met Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 1851. Anthony and Stanton worked together to create the National Woman's Suffrage Association. Anthony and Stanton focused on campaigning for women's voting rights through an amendment to the Constitution. Anthony traveled in in the West, speaking about suffrage and working to gather support for the suffrage amendment. In 1877 Anthony gathered petitions from 26 states, with a total of 10,000 signatures, but Congress turned her away. Anthony persisted, speaking at every Congressional session from 1869-1906. Eventually, Anthony and Stanton's NWSA united with the AWSA, to create the NAWSA. Anthony was named Vice President of the new group. Anthony led the group from 1892 through 1900, after Stanton retired. In 1900, at the age of 80, Anthony stepped down. Anthony died in 1906 at her home in Rochester. |
Anthony wrote a petition that asked Congress to repeal the fine placed upon her for her "Unjust arrest".
